The Italian job. This is the rich history of the velodromo Vigorelli.
Built in 1934, the legendary Vigorelli was the fastest velodrome in the World. OLMO, COPPI, ANQUETIL, BALDINI, RIVIÈRE, to mention but a few, for 30 years the velodrome was the «Pista magica» of the Record dell’ora. It hosted 4 World Championships, 23 final stages of the Giro d’Italia and 21 of the Giro di Lombardia. ANTONIO MASPES won two of his seven World Championship sprint titles at the Vigorelli, in 1955 and 1962.
Destroyed after bombing during WW II, the velodrome was first rebuilt in 1946 and until 1985 was the «Scala del ciclismo». After a heavy snow storm in winter 1985, the velodrome was closed, re-opened, closed again, renovated and restored last year but…still closed due to unexpected delays, additional costs and political interference.
